Characteristics
The tri-colored leaves of the Rattlesnake Plant are long and wavy and have a light green color painted with dark green spots and an underside with a dramatic crimson color. Like other prayer plants, the leaves of the lancifolia fold together at night and spread back out in the morning. It is a fast growing but compact show stopper.
Origin & Native Environment
Calathea lancifolia is native to the rainforests of Brazil. It grows wild in warm and moist environment but it has been cultivated as a house plant to tolerate a wider spectrum of conditions.
Naming
Calathea lancifolia, also known as Calathea insignis or Geoppertia insignis, is commonly called the Rattlesnake Plant for the resemblance between the shape of its leaves and tale end of a rattlesnake.
Care Instructions
Water
It is important to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water Calatheas little but often to ensure that they stay well hydrated, but allow the roots to breathe.
Light
Calatheas will thrive with medium, indirect sunlight. They can tolerate lower light conditions. The lovely leaves will fade or scorch in direct sunlight.
Soil
Requires moisture retention and good drainage. A well draining soil mix with added perlite or sand and peat moss or coco coir will help the it stay hydrated but not soggy. Prefers neutral to acidic soil, and will thrive with a pH around 6.5.
Humidity
Their native environment is a tropical rainforest, so these plants love humidity. Humidity should be at 50% or higher.
Temperature
Coming from a tropical climate, Calatheas appreciate warmth. They thrive in a temperature range between 65°F and 85°F. It can tolerate temperatures as low as 60°F.
Fertilizer
Fertilize once a month with a diluted balanced all purpose fertilizer through spring and summer.
