Characteristics
This highly variegated Snake Plant has thick, leathery leaves. Each leaf is marked with deep green and the yellow and gold that lend their name to this cultivar.
Origin & Native Environment
Snake Plants are native to tropical Africa. They are accustomed to warm and dry environments, creating an easy transition to life as a houseplant.
Naming
The Golden Flame Snake Plant is named for the bright yellow gold striping that marks each of the leaves like a flame jumping up from a campfire. Snake Plants are also known as Mother-in-Laws Tongue, Bow String Hemp, and Devil's Tongue. Though it is commonly called Sansevieria, Snake Plants are now widely accepted as a part of the Dracaena genus.
Care Instructions
Water
These hardy plants are native to arid deserts and are drought tolerant. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water every other week in spring and summer and once a month through fall and winter.
Light
They can tolerate a wide variety of light conditions, from low light to bright sun. They will do best in indirect sunlight.
Soil
Snake Plants like sandy, loose, well draining mix of soil. A general cactus or succulent mix works well. They can tolerate both basic and acidic soil. Sansevieria grow well in a soil pH range of 4.5 to 8.5, although a range of 5.5 to 7.5 is preferred.
Humidity
The arid origins of the Snake Plant mean that it requires no additional humidity. The dry interior environment of any home will do.
Temperature
Keep Snake Plants above 55°F and they will be content, though they can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F for brief periods.
Fertilizer
Snake Plants are very low maintenance and are light feeders. Fertilize sparingly, once or twice in spring and summer with a balanced, all-purpose houseplant food.
